A well-rounded guide to the world of queer cinema
The Bent Lens
A World Guide
to Gay and Lesbian Film by Lisa Daniel and Claire Jackson Alyson, $22.95 trade paperback

the
Queer cinema has sure come a long way. A look at this year's Oscar nominations shows three of the five Best Director nominations went to gay men (Rob Marshall, Stephen Daldry, and Pedro Almodovar) and many of the top film and acting nods went to characters and stories that were queer.
But this explosion of queer cinema in the mainstream is only the tip of the iceberg. Over the last few decades there has steadily grown a strong body of film that is proudly queer.
The Bent Lens by Lisa Daniel and Claire Jackson is a very com-
Compiled alphabetically each entry includes the director, writer, country of origin, date of release, main cast members and a synopsis. Wherever applicable, the entry also includes awards that the film has received, the distributor and how to get the movie.
At the end of the book are several comprehensive indexes to help the reader find films of specific interest. There are four indexes by genre, country, director and interest. The book concludes with a listing of

over 500 film distributors and sales agents, as well as GLBT film festivals around the world. The book also has a list on web sites of particular interest to aficionados of queer films.
This second edition includes 2,600 titles from over 60 countries spanning queer cinema from as early as 1914 to the present. The entries are interspersed with stills from many of the films. The book also includes four essays about queer cinema: "Queer Cinema Since 1997" by Daniel Mudie Cunningham, “Queer Asian Cinema" by Helen Hok-Sze Leung, "The Transgender Look" by Judith Halberstam, and "History Lessons: An Interview with Barbara Hammer."
This book is essential for anyone interested in queer cinema, from the ardent cinephile to the educator trying to find queerspecific film material.
The book is also great for the person beginning to explore all the multi-dimensional riches of queer cinema.
There is only one major drawback. While the writers seem to have collated many major and minor films, one of the best queer-related films of recent years, Billy Elliot by out director Stephen Daldry, is not in the book. It's a huge oversight. What were the writers thinking?
This encyclopedia-like book is well compiled and handsomely put together. The entries are easily accessible and concise yet informative. Written by the director (Lisa Daniels) and the president (Claire Jackson) of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, The Bent Lens is available in the U.S. for the first time.
Go get a copy, make a list of must-see films, pop some corn, and settle in for nights and nights of great entertainment.
